“Omg, birthday cakes and candles…” N said to me early this morning before school as she entered my classroom.
“Huh? Is it your birthday?! Ohhhh, is there cake in the faculty room?” I replied, having no idea what she was talking about.
“No,” she said. “I just read something that said people need to start a new tradition of clapping out the candles instead of blowing them out so germs don’t spread.”
Imagine?! Maybe “clap on, clap off” battery-operated or wireless sound sensitive candles will be the next fad at birthday parties.
While I’m trying not to panic, it is overwhelming to think about how many lifestyle practices and habits we might have to alter.
Cupcakes seem like the safest choice to me. Your candle, your germs, your cupcake. 🙂
I saw this amazing info graphic from Laurie Halse Anderson this morning that explained that if we social distance now, we can keep from overwhelming our health care system. When I got sick over the weekend I stayed home two extra days to be sure I was symptom free and spoke to my doctor so everyone would be calm.

This is such a great slice. There are SO MANY things we probably should alter anyway! I liked your last line. “Your candle, your germs, your cupcake. 🙂 “

I cannot conceive of such candles – but then I could not conceive of what I’ve seen on this news just today – shows like Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune taping without live audiences, colleges canceling live classes and going online. I cannot think where this will lead … your post is a true reminder of how daily life is about to be radically altered. I hope not for long …
